In December 2023, the University of Missouri Division of IT networking team began a multiyear project to enhance and expand Wi-Fi coverage spanning 150 buildings. There have been limited updates to campus wireless and wired networks in the last 10 years. These improvements will have a positive impact on every member of the MU community, including researchers.
“We are creating a modernized ecosystem that ensures our network capabilities are compatible with and support new and evolving technologies, such as IoT sensors used in data collection, artificial intelligence and augmented reality,” said Nate Roettgen, director of IT infrastructure. “It’s going to provide investigators with faster, more reliable and secure wireless connectivity, which ultimately will help them conduct their research more effectively.”
Over the past nine months, the networking team surveyed campus buildings to identify weak spots and establish a better coverage map for wired and wireless access points.
“It’s been a multifaceted project that has taken a lot of time and collaboration among various teams, and we are excited to be able to strengthen our networking capabilities with state-of-the-art technology,” said Larry Calhoon, senior IT manager.
What users can expect:
- Faster speeds: The upgraded Wi-Fi network will provide faster and more reliable internet speeds for a smoother online experience.
- Enhanced coverage: The new infrastructure will extend Wi-Fi coverage to previously underserved areas, ensuring a more comprehensive network throughout each building
- State-of-the-art technology: Our upgraded system will leverage the latest in 6E wireless technology, ensuring compatibility with current and future devices.
Schedule:
All phases of the connectivity project will be completed by January 2027. The first phase, which is expected to conclude in August, includes upgrading Wi-Fi in 27 campus buildings. During this period, there may be brief interruptions in service.
