Effective Jan. 25, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is enacting a new Data Management and Sharing Policy, which replaces the 2003 NIH Data Sharing Policy.

University of Missouri faculty, staff and students can learn more about the policy during a Zoom presentation from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 3.

The event is led by Michele Kennett, associate vice chancellor for research compliance in the Division of Research, Innovation and Impact, and Steven Pryor, Librarian III, digital scholarship librarian and interim head of digital services with the University of Missouri Libraries.

The duo will share resources, grantsmanship guidance and implementation strategies for new projects.

According to the NIH, “all data should be considered for data sharing. Data should be made as widely and freely available as possible while safeguarding the privacy of participants and protecting confidential and proprietary data.”

To facilitate data sharing, the agency states “investigators are expected to include a plan for sharing final research data for research purposes or state why data sharing is not possible.”

The benefits of responsible data management and sharing include accelerating the pace of biomedical research, enabling validation of research results and providing accessibility to high-value datasets, according to the NIH.

MU researchers can view a December recording about the policy change.

The MU Libraries also provide more information on this policy change, including what to include in a plan.

The NIH offers more information about this new policy, including 12 tips and resources.
