The Missouri Center for Addiction Research and Engagement is currently soliciting applications for pilot project funding to be included as part of an upcoming center grant submission to the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The overall focus of the proposed center is on the identification of the antecedents and consequences of alcohol consumption with an early focus on how these antecedents and consequences shift as individuals transition across the minimum legal drinking age of 21 in the United States. The initial projects that will comprise the center will employ survey methods, alcohol administration, ecological momentary assessment, neuropsychological assessment and neuroimaging technologies.

For this initial round of applications, the center is looking to solicit two types of applications:

  • Applications that are consistent with the described focus on transitions across the minimum legal drinking age and potential synergies with the initial projects.
  • Applications that focus on antecedents and consequences of alcohol consumption at other points in development and would form the basis for future iterations of the center.

For both application types, the center is interested in applications at all levels of investigation, from bench to bedside.

Interested pilot investigators should either be early career investigators that earned their PhD in the last five years or mid- or later-career investigators that are interested in incorporating alcohol into their existing research program.

Interested applicants should submit a brief, one-page abstract describing the aims and general design of their proposed study. Applications must be received by Oct. 15 to receive full consideration.

The center is planning to host two informational meetings via Zoom to provide an overview of the proposed center and the goals of the pilot core, and to allow interested investigators to ask questions and discuss potential project ideas. These will be held on Sept. 13 from 1-2 p.m. and Sept. 28 from 1-2 p.m.

People unable to make either of these meetings or who have additional questions about the application or the application process, can contact Ian Gizer (gizeri@missouri.edu) or Denis McCarthy (mccarthydm@missouri.edu) for more information or to set up an additional meeting.
