Research Council Grants of up to $15,000 are available for University of Missouri faculty activities leading to book contracts, juried performances and art exhibits, peer-reviewed articles in AAU-endorsed journals, the generation of pilot data for grant proposals and other work aligned with institutional priorities.

Often these internal grants support research and scholarly activities that contribute to the competitiveness of grant proposals for external funding. MU has awarded more than $1.6 million to support 182 projects in the last five years, and this fall, the grants increased from a maximum of $10,000 to $15,000.

“This will allow the funding of a similar number of applications at increased levels,” said Alan Parrish, associate professor of medical pharmacology and physiology and the faculty fellow who manages the Research Council. “This increase is a commitment to provide sufficient intramural funding to support faculty in scholarship and research.”

Who is eligible for Research Council funding?
Faculty members at the level of assistant professor (or above) with tenure, on tenure-track or ranked non-tenure-track with a doctorate (or the discipline’s highest terminal degree, such as an MFA) are eligible for Research Council grants.

What makes a winning application?
Interested applicants should review the Research Council Grant guidelines for more information.

  • It is important that the project described in the application falls within the grant timeframe and funding limits.
  • Be sure to check the page limits and confirm that all sections of the application are included.
  • A major step is getting past the compliance review. Applicants can take advantage of a courtesy compliance check by emailing the complete application PDF to internalfunding@missouri.edu at least five days before the deadline.
  • Make sure the application includes a clear description of how the project will advance a scholarly project (books, recordings) or provide required data for extramural funding.

What is the application process?
Research Council Grant applications should be submitted electronically through InfoReady, MU’s electronic proposal system. Jan. 17 is the next submission deadline. Council members will review the applications and make recommendations to the vice chancellor for research about which projects should receive funding. Applicants will be notified by March 3.

What are examples of projects that have been funded?
Around 36 projects receive funding each year. Examples:

  • Database created from U.S. presidential diaries, Aliki Barnstone, English professor.
  • Early 19th century trombone solos and concerti recordings, Timothy Howe, associate professor of music.
  • Bacterial-based strategy for targeting treatment-resistant pancreatic cancer, Chiswili Chabu, assistant professor of biological sciences.
  • A single‐arm feasibility study of a medication adherence intervention for adults with irritable bowel syndrome, LeeAnne Sherwin, assistant teaching professor of nursing.
