Supporting faculty discovery and creativity

Associate Professor Jeffrey Ferguson said he plans to use Research Council funding to excavate and analyze artifacts at a New Mexico site built in the 1300s. He encourages faculty to focus on the fact that these internal grants can lead to external awards and to keep applying if they aren't funded on the first try.

The University of Missouri’s Division of Research, Innovation and Impact awarded the first round of 2025-26 Research Council grants to faculty investigators who submitted proposals in August.

This internal funding of up to $15,000 supports research, scholarship and creative endeavors that lead to book contracts, juried theatre and music performances, art exhibits, peer-reviewed articles and the generation of pilot data to bolster proposals for external funding.

Jeffrey Ferguson, associate professor of anthropology, uses archeological excavation and compositional analysis of stone and ceramic artifacts to better understand communities that existed hundreds of years ago.

“My long-term goal is to conduct small excavations at many sites in the Lion Mountain area of west-central New Mexico to explore social, economic and political interaction between local communities and surrounding regions over a 1,000-year time span," Ferguson said. “This initial Research Council funding supports the next step in establishing collaborations with local, federal and tribal entities that will enable submission of larger external grants from agencies like the National Science Foundation.”

Although the application closed Oct. 27 for the second round of Research Council grants, there are two more opportunities to apply for funding through InfoReady. Deadlines:

  • Jan. 20 – 5 p.m. (awardees will be notified by March 13)
  • March 30 – 5 p.m. (awardees will be notified by May 15)
