Technology Management and Industry Relations has a new name that better reflects the office’s main role at Mizzou: To leverage the commercial potential of faculty and staff research.

The name change to Technology Advancement Office (TAO) is part of the restructuring of MU’s Office of Economic Development into three focus areas: Innovation and entrepreneurship, technology advancement and industry partnerships.

“We are building a more entrepreneurial culture and trying new ideas to make Mizzou a more effective economic driver for the state,” said Bill Turpin, interim associate vice chancellor for economic development.

When Turpin began his new role in September, university leaders charged him with launching new entrepreneurship programs to help students and faculty, creating more meaningful partnerships with industry, attracting sponsored research, and increasing revenue generated by technology advancement.

TAO professionals work at the interface of science, business and patent law. They collaborate with inventors and outside companies, entrepreneurs and investors to move university innovations and technologies to a commercial setting for further development and transformation into products, jobs and businesses. TAO is part of the MU Office of Research, Graduate Studies and Economic Development.
