Faculty Grant Writing Institute
MU's Office of Research will sponsor the seventh Faculty Grant Writing Institute this summer. The Institute assists faculty in developing high quality extramural grant proposals in order to yield more grant awards. The small group setting of the Institute enables individualized attention and informal conversations that develop positive relationships among participants and between the participants and the various grants personnel who support them. This year's application process reflects the following changes from previous years:
- No stipends or proposal development budgets will be provided to participants.
- No cost match will be required of the participants' divisions and/or departments.
- Participants will not be required to devote full-time effort to the Institute during the month of June.
The instructional and networking aspects of the Institute will remain unchanged. The fundamental difference will be that participation in the Institute will no longer be coupled with funding and protected research time during June. We hope that these changes will make it easier for chairs and deans to support faculty participation in the Institute and that the increased flexibility as to when the proposal development tasks and preliminary research work are done will make it easier for faculty members to participate. Questions regarding the Institute or the application process should be referred to Mary Licklider at 884-6438 or lickliderm@missouri.edu.

Getting Above the Payline
Do panel reviewers say your proposal is good but not great? Have you had scores that are close to funding, but
not close enough? Join Scott Kovaleski, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Linda Blockus, Director of Undergraduate Research, Biological Science and Donald Burke, Associate Professor in the
Life Sciences Center for an open discussion of how to survive in today’s competitive grant culture. |

Why is the Budget Important?
Too often, the budget gets overlooked or delegated to someone (anyone!) else. Yet, the budget and budget
justification can help convince reviewers of your projects’ worth. Join Grant Writers Susan Hazelwood and
Sheryl Koenig for a discussion of how to build budgets and justifications that meet the requirements and sell
your project. |

Tips & Tricks to Make Your Proposal Shine
Tired of panel reviewers saying you didn’t address a point when you know you did? Come to this session and
learn why making your proposal easier for a reviewer to read is worth your time. Grant writers Suzanne Hansford-Bowles and Shelley Hilton will share tips on how to prepare your proposal so your ideas shine through and
your proposal stands out from the rest. |

Tackling the Outreach and Evaluation Sections of Your Proposal
Agencies frequently require outreach components to expand the impact of the work to a broader audience.
They're also under pressure to document results and impact through strong project evaluations. Join Dr. Anna
Waldron, Director of the Office of Science and Outreach, to learn how to strengthen these portions of your
grant proposal. |

Writing Basics for Grant Communication
You may be experienced at writing manuscripts for research journals and professional publications, but writing
grant proposals requires a different approach. Making your plans clear and convincing necessitates revisiting
some of the fundamentals. Join Marty Patton, Associate Professor and Director of First-Year Writing, and
Melissa Mitchum, Assistant Professor in the Bond Life Sciences Center, for a discussion of writing style. |
