The NRT program is a new NSF graduate education initiative. The last competition for the Integrated Graduate Research Traineeship (IGERT) program was held in 2013; no future IGERT competitions are planned.

This program features two tracks.  The Traineeship Track is dedicated to training STEM graduate students in any interdisciplinary research theme that is a national priority, but particularly in the area of Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (DESE).  The Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Track is dedicated solely to testing and evaluating novel approaches to graduate education and to generate the knowledge for their implementation and broader adoption.

The PI of a Traineeship Track proposal must be on the faculty of the submitting institution.  There are no PI restrictions or limits for the IGE Track.

Organizations may submit up to three applications total.  Two applications may be submitted for the Traineeship Track.  If one application is submitted for this track, it can be either DESE or another theme.  If two are submitted, at least one must be a DESE proposal. Only one application may be submitted for the IGE Track.

All limited submission announcements can be tracked by deadline via the Calendar at or by announcement date via the Limited Submissions listing at
