Limited Submission Announcement

The Searle Scholars Program supports the independent research of exceptional young faculty in the biomedical sciences and chemistry. Applicants for year 2008 awards will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences.

Candidates should have begun their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2007, and therefore be in their first or second year. This appointment must be a tenure-track position, and must be in an academic department of an invited, degree-granting institution.

Potential applicants are advised to read the Eligibility section of the web site as a guide. If there is any doubt about a potential applicant’s eligibility, please contact Dr. Kandis Smith at 882-6396. Common mistakes made in preparing applications include the following: (i) failure to describe their role in research reported with more than one author, and (ii) failure to heed the request that the application material NOT be stapled together.

Some individuals who were nominated last year may still meet the eligibility criteria. If this is the case, please discuss a potential re-application with Dr. Kandis Smith. Please remember that we are primarily concerned with the potential of the applicant to make innovative and high-impact contributions to research over an extended period of time. Modifying the research proposal may not be sufficient to overcome other criteria that previously counted against the applicant.

Because the UM System is limited to one application for this program, and the MU campus is limited to one application for consideration by the UM System, letters of intent and biographical sketches must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, June 27, 2007. The letter of intent should be limited to two pages and should include 1) an overview of the specific areas of research to be undertaken in the next few years, 2) an explanation as to why the work is particularly novel and important, and 3) what part(s) of the research would be supported with Searle funds. The biographical sketch must be limited to two pages.

The UM System will notify the selected applicant by August 1, 2008.
