Limited Submission Announcement

The Corporation for National and Community Service is accepting applications for the Learn and Serve America School-Based STEM program to bring service-learning that addresses STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) objectives into high-poverty schools that have little service-learning history. Applicants must focus their awarding of subgrants to schools in which more than half the students receive free or reduced price lunches. A crucial part of a grantee’s role is to ensure high-quality implementation among subgrantees and to promote effective and efficient use of resources at the subgrantee level. This role involves monitoring of program quality, overseeing LEA expenditures, identifying grantee and subgrantee staff roles, and providing needed training and technical assistance.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 p.m., Friday, April 18, 2008. Letters of intent should be limited to a 3-page summary, including 1) plans for selecting subgrantees; 2) plans for monitoring subgrantee program quality and expenditures; 3) providing technical assistance; and 4) assuring program elements that provide student participants with opportunities to a) use the knowledge and skills of one or more STEM discipline(s) to identify and address community problems, b) collaborate with peers and community members to set and achieve goals, and c) develop skills and attitudes useful for the workplace and for participating in civic affairs.

Variable, with the project period lasting no longer than three years

Cost match requirements:

By statute, the grantee share of the total cost (grantee + Corporation share) of carrying out a program must be at least:

  • 10 percent for the first year
  • 20 percent for the second year
  • 30 percent for the third year
  • 50 percent for the fourth and any subsequent year(s), which would apply to any recipient that has received a previous three-year grant from Learn and Serve America.
