The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), through its Nuclear Education Program, offers two funding opportunities at the university level to support courses, studies, training, curricula, and disciplines pertaining to nuclear safety, security, or environmental protection: the Scholarship and Fellowship Program and the Faculty Development Program.

Nuclear Education Program – Scholarship and Fellowship

Funding under this program supports promising undergraduate (scholarships) and graduate (fellowships) students pursuing degrees in nuclear-related areas toward eventual careers in nuclear science and engineering. Program requirements include the following:

  • Students who receive scholarships must have a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) GPA at the time of application (3.6 for graduate student fellowships)
  • Students must maintain a course load of at least 12 credit hours per semester or be classified as a full-time student
  • Students must be matriculated in a baccalaureate or graduate degree program in a nuclear-related area.
  • Scholarship and fellowship recipients must serve 6 months in nuclear-related employment for each full or partial year of academic support

Because MU is limited to two applications for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, March 14, 2008. Letters of intent should be limited to three pages and should include 1) a description of the proposed program, including the number and size of the scholarships or fellowships; 2) a plan for recruiting applicants, including marketing strategy; and 3) a description of the management and evaluation plan to ensure the effectiveness of the program.

Nuclear Education Program – Faculty Fellowship

Funding under this opportunity is designed to support new faculty in the nuclear-related fields of Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, and Radiochemistry. The program specifically targets probationary, tenure-track faculty in these disciplines who are in the first six years of their academic careers.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, March 14, 2008. Letters of intent should be limited to three pages and should include 1) a description of the proposed faculty development program; 2) a plan for selecting the best-qualified applicants; and 3) a description of the management and evaluation plan to ensure effectiveness of the program.

Amount:

Awards are for $100,000 per year plus up to an additional $50,000 per year that is awarded to the extent matched by the institution for each of up to two recipients. The maximum amount that NRC will award for a proposal covering two faculty recipients may total up to $300,000 per year, provided that $100,000 is fully matched by the institution.
