The Dana Foundation’s neuroimmunology program, has been redesigned to focus on brain infections and cancers: studies of (1) immune-based therapies for primary brain tumors, and for metastases to the brain of other cancers; (2) immune responses to infections in the brain, including but not limited to viral encephalitis, meningitis, cerebral malaria, and prion diseases; and (3) the immune system’s effects on the brain and how the brain modifies immune function. This program focuses on clinical studies in humans. Animal studies directly relevant to methods used in humans or to human disease will also be considered. Research that can be supported through clinical income should not be submitted.

Support is focused primarily on providing research support to faculty researchers early in their career at the assistant professor level or early in the associate professor level. Established researchers pioneering efforts in these two fields (brain infections and cancers) will still be eligible to apply. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, March 7, 2008. Letters of intent should be limited to a three-page summary of the project, including 1) the hypothesis to be tested, 2) an explanation of how the project will advance neuroimmunology, 3) the significance of the research, and 4) the methods to be used to complete the project.
