The National Science Foundation's Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating US PhD scientists and engineers with the interdisciplinary backgrounds; deep knowledge in chosen disciplines; and technical, professional, and personal skills to become leaders and creative agents for change. The program is intended to establish innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce. Applications will be accepted for both the traineeship program and the resource center program.

Because MU is limited to four preliminary applications for the traineeship program and one application for the resource center program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, February 22, 2008. Letters of intent for traineeship proposals should be limited to 3 pages, summarizing plans for 1) the interdisciplinary theme and major research efforts that form this theme; 2) graduate education and training; 3) recruitment, mentoring and retention; and 4) organizational structure of the program. Letters of intent for resource center proposals should be limited to 3 pages, summarizing plans for 1) fostering collaboration and sharing of best practices across all IGERTS for recruiting and retaining trainees, 2) communicating among the various cohorts of the IGERT community and between these cohorts and the NSF, 3) developing and supporting an e-community, and 4) disseminating program models, materials and best practices nationally.
