The Energy Innovations Small Grant Program (EISG) Program, managed by the California Energy Commission fund energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects that are not adequately provided for by competitive and regulated energy markets. Proposals must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for consideration under the EISG program:

  1. The proposed work must advance science or technology not adequately addressed by competitive and regulated markets
  2. Propose an original innovative solution to a significant energy problem
  3. Propose work that is still in the proof-of-concept phase
  4. Address a California market need
  5. Provide a clear potential benefit to California electricity ratepayers
  6. Target one of the following six program areas:
    1. Industrial/Agriculture/Water End-Use Efficiency
    2. Building End-Use Efficiency
    3. Environmentally Preferred Advanced Generation
    4. Renewable Generation
    5. Energy-Related Environmental Research
    6. Energy Systems Integration (formerly "Strategic Energy Research")

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, January 18, 2007. Letters of intent should be limited to a three page description of the project focusing on the eligibility criteria described above.


A maximum of $95,000 for hardware projects requiring physical testing and $50,000 for modeling projects is available per grant project. Approximately $2.6 million per year are allocated to EISG grants. There are no matching funds or repayment requirements associated with the EISG Program. However, cost sharing is encouraged and is a consideration in the evaluation process.
