The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) have announced a new predoctoral NRSA institutional research training grant program to train scientists at the interface of the behavioral and biomedical sciences. The goal is to develop basic behavioral scientists with rigorous, broad-based training in the biomedical sciences who are available to assume leadership roles related to the Nation's biomedical, clinical and behavioral research needs. These programs must include equal participation of both biomedical and behavioral faculty and leadership, and must provide an interdisciplinary research training experience and curriculum for predoctoral trainees that integrates both behavioral and biomedical perspectives, approaches and methodologies. The primary focus is on providing this training to students with previous behavioral training, and/or who are enrolled in behavioral sciences graduate departments; however, programs can be enriched by including some students with basic biomedical backgrounds and providing cross-training in the behavioral sciences.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, March 7, 2008. Letters of intent should be limited to a total of 3 pages and should 1) describe the anticipated mission and objectives of the training program, 2) curricular plans to include behavioral and biomedical science as well as quantitative training, 3) the research activities/rotations in which the trainees will engage, 4) plans for recruiting trainees, and 5) plans for monitoring trainees and for program evaluation.
