The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is inviting applications for Core Center grants to support molecular therapy research in order to develop treatments for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and other genetic diseases of interest to NIDDK. Core Centers provide shared resources to enhance the efficiency and foster collaborations within and among institutions with a strong existing base of funded research relevant to gene transfer and gene correction technologies. Centers will also support a Pilot and Feasibility Program and an Educational Enrichment Program.

This ongoing program is intended to foster research toward the goal of developing molecular therapies for the treatment of CF. Therefore, the applicant organization and its partners need to propose a central focus on molecular therapy for Cystic Fibrosis. Because the technologies for gene transfer and gene correction are still evolving, applicants with a strong research base on development of new approaches for these technologies will be at a significant advantage.

The approaches for achieving long-term and high level expression of therapeutic genes are common problems facing many genetic diseases. Therefore, Core Center participants may also be developing these approaches for other genetic diseases of interest to NIDDK, including genetic endocrine, metabolic, digestive, liver, kidney and hematologic disease.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, December 14, 2007. Letters of intent should be limited to a three-page overview of the proposed project summarizing the following elements: 1) proposed research projects, 2) research core(s), 3) educational enrichment programming, and 4) pilot and feasibility program.

Up to $750,000 dollars annually for up to 5 years
