The overall objective of the National Institutes of Health’s Bridges to the Baccalaureate program is to strengthen the pipeline of biomedical- and behavioral science-related graduates from underrepresented groups and/or health disparities populations, a necessary first step in increasing diversity in professional personnel investigating health disparities. The Bridges to the Baccalaureate program supports joint efforts of baccalaureate degree-granting and associate degree-granting institutions to develop integrated programs for identifying potential candidates and provides them with the necessary academic skills to enable their transition to undergraduate degree programs in biomedical, behavioral or related sciences. These developmental academic activities aimed at the associate degree students include challenging course work that is acceptable at the baccalaureate degree-granting institution; instructional strategies that inculcate an interest in advanced studies in the sciences; and essential skills such as time management, test taking, note taking and independent learning required to pursue an advanced degree in the sciences. These programs require close cooperation between the faculties at the partner institutions in developing and delivering courses that prepare two-year college students for degree programs.
