The Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award Program supports junior faculty members with MDs or MD/PhDs working in any disease area as they begin careers as independent clinical researchers. For the purposes of this award program, clinical research is defined as research conducted with human subjects with direct application to the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of any disease, including

  • Studies on the etiology and pathogenesis of human disease
  • Therapeutic interventions
  • Clinical trials
  • Disease control research that investigates how scientifically obtained information on prevention, early detection, and early diagnosis can be efficiently applied
  • Epidemiological studies
  • Health outcomes research that either attempts to determine systematically the risk/benefits and costs of various medical practices or attempts to utilize these results in defining more effective medical practice guidelines

Applicants must:

  • Be physician-scientists conducting clinical research in any disease area;
  • Have received MDs or foreign equivalents from accredited institutions;
  • Be working in US degree-granting institutions, but do not have to be US citizens;
  • Have full-time, faculty-level positions not higher than the assistant professor level; and
  • Have been appointed to their first full-time faculty level positions between January 31, 2002 and January 31, 2007. All full-time post-fellowship instructor-level positions will be considered full-time faculty-level appointments.

Nominations of women and under-represented minorities in medicine are strongly encouraged.

Because MU is limited to three applications for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, November 17, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to a two-page summary of the proposed research, its originality and methods, along with a two-page biographical sketch of the nominee.

Amount:

$135,000 per year for 3 years
