The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Short-Term Educational Experiences for Research (STEER) in the Environmental Health Sciences for Undergraduates and High School Students (R25) supports organized, short-term programs of research experiences for high school and undergraduate students and informational exchanges designed to impart an appreciation of research on environmental impacts on human health. As part of the NIEHS Strategic Plan, the NIEHS is enhancing its efforts in four major areas: basic science, disease-oriented research, global environmental health, and training tomorrow’s scientists.

Because MU is limited to one application per school or college for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, October 6, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to three pages and should state the following: 1) the school or college from which the application will be submitted, 2) the NIEHS theme to be addressed by the project and how, 3) the scope of the proposed research, 4) a brief description of the number and rank of applicants (high school students or college undergraduates) and their proposed training, 5) a brief description of the management of the project; and 6) a listing of anticipated partner organizations, if any.


Direct costs are limited to $55,000 in any single year for up to 5 years.
