The National Science Foundation (NSF) Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Teams (NIRT) and Nanoscale Exploratory Research (NER) supports fundamental research and catalyzes synergistic science and engineering research and education in four emerging themes in nanoscale science and technology: 1) fundamental nanoscale phenomena and processes in active nanostructures, 2) nanosystems with improved functionality and new architectures, 3) hierarchical nanomanufacturing, and 4) long-term societal and educational implications of scientific and technological advances on the nanoscale.

For NIRT, an organization may submit no more than two proposals on which it is the lead organization. The same organization may be a collaborative partner in any number of other multi-organization group proposals in which it is not the lead. For NER, an organization may submit no more than two proposals on which it is the lead organization. An exception is made for an additional NER proposal that may be submitted in "Societal and Educational Issues Associated with Long-term Research Science and Engineering Advances." At least one NER proposal submitted by an organization must have a PI or co-PI at the level of assistant professor or equivalent.

Because of these limits, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 4:00 pm Friday, September 22, 2005. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should include 1) whether the proposal will be to the NIRT or NER program; 2) which of the four NIRT/NER themes will be addressed by the project; 3) a brief description of the research to be pursued; 4) a brief description of the management, education and outreach aspects of the project; and 5) a listing of anticipated partner organizations, if any.

Amount:

A NIRT award will be in the range of $250,000-$350,000 per year for four years. NER awards will be made as one-year grants not to exceed $130,000.

MU Deadline: 4:00 p.m., Friday, September 22, 2006
