The Searle Scholars Program awards grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in the first or second year of their first appointment at the assistant professor level, and whose current appointment is a tenure-track position. Applicants for year 2007 awards will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. Candidates should have begun their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2005 and therefore be in their first or second year. This appointment must be a tenure-track position.

Because the UM System is limited as to the number of applications it can submit, letters of intent and biographical sketches must be submitted to the Office of Research, 202 Jesse Hall, no later than 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 7. Letters of intent should be limited to two pages and should include 1) an overview of the specific areas of research to be undertaken in the next few years, 2) an explanation as to why the work is particularly novel and important, and 3) what part(s) of the research would be supported with Searle funds. Biographical sketches must be limited to two pages.

Normally 15 grants of $80,000 per year for three years

MU Deadline: 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 7, 2006 (letter of intent)
