The NIH Fogarty International Center (FIC) international training and research support in environmental and occupational health (EOH)-related sciences provides support to train environmental and occupational health scientists from developing countries for careers in research and public health in their home countries. The program vision is to build global capacity and collaboration to better understand, investigate, control, and prevent environmental and occupational health problems in developing countries and in the United States. Scientific fields of training include, but are not limited to:

  • Laboratory toxicological research
  • Epidemiologic research and surveillance
  • Clinical research
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Workplace risk assessment
  • Engineering control and injury prevention
  • Hazardous waste assessment
  • Environmental/occupational disease prevention and control, including cost/benefit analyses

The current announcement requests investigator-initiated efforts to address relevant EOH issues in the target developing countries and in-country infrastructure development, including human capacity for research (including clinical research), research implementation, bettering public health, information dissemination, and mitigation of adverse consequences of environmental exposures and evaluation of success.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 5:00 pm Monday, May 1, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to three pages and should summarize 1) partner institutions and their location(s), 2) proposed research and training activities, and 3) plans for translating the results of research into clinical and public health practice.


Maximum annual direct costs are $200,000 direct costs for competing renewals and $150,000 direct costs for new starts.
