Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences foster the development and productivity of biomedical researchers who are early in their careers and help them make the critical transition to becoming independent investigators. The program provides five years of support to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the early years of faculty service. Candidates must have completed at least 12 months, but not more than 48 months, of postdoctoral research training by the October 3 application deadline. For candidates with an MD degrees, postdoctoral training excludes clinically oriented residencies that do not contain major research components. The portion of a residency that has a major research component should be noted and added to the months of postdoctoral training. During the award period, at least 80 percent of the awardee’s time must be devoted to research-related activities.
