The National Endowment for the Humanities is accepting proposals for Challenge Grants which help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Because of the matching requirements, these NEH awards also strengthen the humanities by encouraging nonfederal sources of support. Both federal and nonfederal funds must provide long-term benefits to the humanities. Challenge grant funds should not merely replace funds already being expended on the humanities, but instead should reflect careful strategic planning to strengthen and enhance the institution's activities in and commitment to the humanities. Challenge grants most commonly augment or establish endowments that support humanities activities in education, public programming, scholarly research, and preservation. Institutions may use the income from invested funds to meet ongoing humanities-related costs.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, March 17, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to a two-page summary of the proposed program and how resources will be utilized. Also include a summary of the fundraising plan.

Amount: Up to $1 million may be requested. Institutions seeking awards larger than $500,000 should consult with NEH staff. Recipients of a first NEH challenge grant must raise three times the amount of federal funds offered; recipients of subsequent NEH challenge grants must raise four times the amount of federal funds offered.
MU Deadline: 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2006 (letter of intent)
