The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is accepting applications for the Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award which recognizes outstanding mid-career physician-scientists who are applying the latest scientific advances to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of disease, and enables these individuals to support and mentor the next generation of physician-scientists conducting clinical research. The successful candidate will have an active translational clinical research program with demonstrated ability to lead a program combining clinical and basic research, as well as a proven track record as an outstanding mentor to physician-scientists and other clinical investigators.

All nominees must:

  • have received an MD from an accredited institution in the United States (holders of MD/PhD degrees are also eligible, as are holders of MD-equivalent degrees from non-US institutions);
  • have a full-time university faculty appointment at the level of associate professor or above as of February 14, 2006;
  • have been appointed to their first full-time, faculty-level position no earlier than February 14, 1991 (all full-time post-fellowship instructor-level positions will be considered full-time faculty-level appointments); and
  • have an established translational clinical research program (in any disease area).

Because MU is limited to two applications for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, January 20, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to a 1-page summary describing the scope and methodology of the proposed project and the plans for mentoring junior physician-scientists in translational clinical research. In addition to this summary, a 2-page biographical sketch of the applicant should be provided.

Amount: Up to $1.5 million for a period of at least 5 years
