As part of the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research, the Training in Computational Neuroscience: From Biology to Model and Back Again (T90) program will support integrated research education and research training programs that provide interdisciplinary training in basic neuroscience and the theoretical and technological approaches of computational neuroscience. It is intended that programs will provide research education and research training in both experimental neuroscience and in the theories and principles of the physical, computer, mathematical, or engineering sciences that are necessary to develop models, test them experimentally, and use experimental data to refine the models of normal or disordered neural systems or processes. Programs are further expected to stimulate interactions among training faculty from multiple disciplines and departments and to foster development of an integrated curriculum in computational neuroscience at the applicant institution.

Applications will be accepted either for programs that propose only the undergraduate research training component, or for programs that combine the undergraduate component with a short-term research education component and/or a predoctoral research training program. Each application

  • must include a full-time undergraduate research training component that will combine coursework and hands-on laboratory research experience (R90)
  • may include a short-term research education component that may include scientists at all stages of the career continuum as participants (R90)
  • may include a full-time Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) institutional predoctoral training component (T90); if this component is included, then the application
  • may include a full-time non-NRSA institutional predoctoral training component (R90)

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, January 13, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should 1) list and briefly describe each component to be included, 2) list the departments to be involved and anticipated mentors, and 3) summarize the proposed administrative framework for the program.

Amount: An applicant may request a project period of up to five years with annual direct costs not to exceed $325,000 in year 1, and $500,000 for each of years 2 though 5.
