The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is inviting applications for cooperative agreements to conduct 5-year studies in American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) communities to test the effectiveness of behavioral interventions to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles and/or improve behaviors related to cardiovascular risk, such as weight reduction, regular physical activity, and smoking cessation. These behaviors and lifestyles are known to affect biological cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, glucose intolerance, and diabetes. A central feature will be to develop and test culturally appropriate interventions that could be incorporated into clinical programs of the community health care systems or delivered through public-health approaches in Native communities. The interventions tested should be sustainable and capable of being disseminated to other Native communities after termination of research support.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, January 20, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should summarize 1) the proposed behavioral interventions, 2) methodology for testing effectiveness, and 3) how the interventions will be sustainable.
