The Fogarty International Center (FIC) is inviting applications for International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development Awards to develop graduate-level curricula and provide educational opportunities for developing country academics, researchers and health professionals in international ethics related to performing research involving human subjects.

New applications focusing on research ethics education for Mexico, Central America, China, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam, Nigeria, Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union are especially encouraged due to the amount of NIH-supported research currently conducted in these countries. US and foreign applicant institutions can request up to two years of support for program planning and curriculum development to prepare to apply for comprehensive education/training program support in the future.

The goal of this initiative is to increase the cadre of developing country scientists, health professionals and relevant academics with in-depth knowledge of the ethical considerations, concepts and applications in clinical and public health research. It is expected that such advanced education/training will enhance the career development of individuals from developing countries as well as strengthen expertise to support ethical clinical and public health research at their home institutions.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, December 9, 2006. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should include 1) whether a planning grant or comprehensive grant will be proposed, 2) the foreign institution(s) and country(ies) to be involved, 3) a summary of education and curriculum development plans, 4) anticipated evaluation strategies.
