The Corporation for National and Community Service will make Learn and Serve School-Based awards to “grant-making entities” to expand high-quality service-learning in K-12 schools with the purpose of fostering service-learning in at least 50 percent of all public schools by the year 2010. This competition is also intended to increase the proportion of Learn and Serve participants who come from disadvantaged backgrounds from 40 to 60 percent. The purpose of Learn and Serve America School-Based grants is to involve young people between the ages five and seventeen in service-learning projects that simultaneously support student development and meet community needs in areas such as the environment, education, public safety, and other human needs.

Learn and Serve School-Based Grants provide funds to State Education Agencies (SEAs) and Grant Making Entities (GMEs), which must make subgrants to state-defined Local Education Agencies (LEAs) that are in partnership with at least one additional organization.

Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, December 16. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should include 1) a notation that the applicant intends to apply for a School-Based Grant; 2) the states in which subgrants will be made; 3) a summary of plans for identifying, funding, and supporting the LEA partnerships that will be responsible for implementing service-learning programs in local communities; and 4) anticipated performance measures.
