The NSF Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) seeks to increase the number of students  receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 awards provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 awards support educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM.

Because MU is limited to one application for the Type 1 program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, December 2, 2005. There are no restrictions on the number of submissions for the Type 2 program, so internal letters of intent are not required for this part of the program. Letters of intent for Type 1 proposals should be limited to 3 pages and should summarize 1) the STEM field(s) to be targeted by the project, 2) the increases expected during the five-year grant period in the number of students graduating in targeted STEM fields, 3) proposed strategies to increase the number of students graduating in targeted STEM fields, and 4) a clear statement of which of the proposed activities, if successful, would be expected to be institutionalized by the end of the grant period.
