The National Science Foundation (NSF) announces a program on collaborative research and education in the area of active nanostructures and nanosystems, and on the long-term social change associated with these innovations through Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Teams (NIRT) and Nanoscale Exploratory Research (NER). The goal of these programs is to support fundamental research and catalyze synergistic science and engineering research and education in several emerging areas of nanoscale science and technology, including fundamental nanoscale phenomena and processes in active nanostructures, nanosystems with improved functionality and new architectures, hierarchical nanomanufacturing, and long-term societal and educational implications of scientific and technological advances on the nanoscale.

Because MU is limited to three applications for NIRT and two applications for NER, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, ltdsub@missouri.edu, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, October 7, 2005. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should include 1) whether the proposal will be to the NIRT or NER program; 2) which of the four NIRT/NER themes will be addressed by the project; 3) a brief description of the research to be pursued; 4) a brief description of the management, education and outreach aspects of the project; and 5) a listing of anticipated partner organizations, if any.

Amount: A NIRT award will be in the range of $250,000-$400,000 per year for four years. NER awards will for one year and may not exceed $130,000.
MU Deadline: 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 7, 2005 (letter of intent)
NSF Deadline:

November 14, 2005 (full application)
