NIH Partnerships for Hepatitis C Vaccine Development stimulate the development of vaccines against infection with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and its chronic sequelae. Research may include but is not limited to the following areas:

  • The design and construction of vaccines against HCV infection and its chronic sequelae.
  • Preclinical evaluation of vaccine candidates including but not limited to induction of the specifically targeted immunological responses; performance of preclinical testing for safety and toxicity in animal models and other benchmarks required for successful submission and review of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application by the FDA; and preliminary determinations of dose, dosing interval, and route of delivery.
  • Process development and pilot-scale manufacture of vaccine candidates, under cGMP conditions, to provide sufficient quantities for preclinical and early clinical evaluation.

A key component of this initiative is the development of appropriate partnerships between the government and industry. All projects must demonstrate substantive involvement by the industry partner.

Because MU is limited to one application for this competition, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, 203 Jesse Hall, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, September 2, 2005. Letters of intent shall be limited to 3 pages and include a identification of industry partner(s); anticipated budget; and an overview of the planned research and its effect on the concepts, methods, technologies, treatments, services, or preventative interventions that drive the field.

Amount: NIAID intends to commit approximately $2 million in FY 2006 to fund 2-3 new grants in response to this RFA. An applicant may request a project period of up to 5 years.
MU Deadline: September 2, 2005
NIH Deadline:

Letter of intent (not required) - September 12, 2005
Full application - October 17, 2005
