The NIH has issued a call for application for its Integrated Advanced Information Systems (IAIMS) program. IAIMS are comprehensive, trans-organizational information management structures. To benefit from advances in the information landscape, health-related organizations must (1) seamlessly integrate their own digital information resources with relevant information obtained from external sources, and (2) bring digital information to health care teams, researchers, teachers, students, patients and the general public in a way that supports sound decisions, efficient research, and effective action. In an IAIMS environment, organizations apply proven management practices and appropriate expertise about informatics and information services in order to link and relate the published biomedical knowledge base with clinical, research, educational and administrative information using computers and networks.

The purpose of an IAIMS planning grant is to produce a comprehensive, written plan for an organization's approach to context-appropriate information. Each organization must implement approaches that select the right subset of information from the available sources, and present it in the way most effective for a given problem and person.

Because there is a limitation on applications to this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, 202 Jesse Hall, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, August 26, 2005. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and should include 1) a statement of the information problem, 2) a summary of the existing information resources to be reviewed, 3) a listing of the stakeholder groups expected to be involved in the planning process, and 4) an overview of the planning process to be used.

Amount: up to $150,000 per year in direct costs for one or two years
