Summer Stipends sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities support individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools. Summer Stipends support full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months.

All applicants teaching at MU must be nominated by the institution. MU is limited to two nominees. At least one of the two must be a "junior nominee" holding the rank of instructor or assistant professor or a comparably early career stage.

Because MU is limited in the number of nominations it can make, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, 203 Jesse Hall, no later than 5:00 pm Friday, August 26, 2005. Letters of intent should be no more than three pages and should briefly outline 1) a description of the proposed project and its significance to thought and knowledge in the field of the project, 2) the quality or promise of quality of the applicant's work as an interpreter of the humanities, and 3) the quality of the proposed project.

Amount: $5,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing.

MU Deadline: 5:00 p.m., Friday, August 26, 2005

Endowment Deadline: October 3, 2005
