The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announces the availability of funds for cooperative agreement (U19) applications to establish Centers for Excellence to Promote a Healthier Workforce.

The primary objective of this initiative is to conduct transdisciplinary research, education and translation projects to determine and communicate the ability of an integrated or coordinated approach to improve the outcomes of workplace health protection and promotion programs. Among the areas of emphasis will be the development of measures to define health-supportive workplaces and to validate improvement of health, job satisfaction, productivity; and in the control of direct and indirect costs of disease and injury through effective interventions to reduce work-related risk.

Center projects must have relevant partnerships with employers from government, academia, industry, the benefits community or healthcare organizations. Investigators should describe how these partnerships will be established and how each partner will contribute to the research plan without significant impact on employee performance and financial obligations to the grantee.

Because MU is limited to a single application to this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, 202 Jesse Hall, no later than 5:00 pm Friday July 15, 2005.  Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages and include a synopsis of planned activities, identification of potential collaborators, and a budget outline.

Amount: $5,000,000.  Up to $1,000,000 per year for 5 years.

MU Deadline: July 15, 2005

Foundation Deadline: Letter of intent (optional) - August 14, 2005
  Full application - September 14, 2005
