The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program is intended to strengthen the leadership and academic productivity of junior medical school faculty who are dedicated to improving health and health care. Under the program, talented junior faculty will receive support to enhance their skills through institutional and national mentoring, specific research experience, and protected time in which to acquire it.  Preference will be given to applicants interested in the fields of health policy research, epidemiology, health services research and community-based research. The program will enable these committed physicians to engage in research that will help change health policy and health care.

Each applicant must be nominated by the dean of a four-year, fully accredited US medical school and meet the following criteria: a) be a physician (MD or DO) who is a US citizen or permanent resident; b) be a junior faculty member in any discipline in a regular line position that could lead to tenure; c) be committed to a career in academic medicine; d) provide evidence of research skills (having had a research fellowship or equivalent training); e) have had at least two papers published in peer-reviewed journals at the time of the application deadline; f) demonstrate excellence as a teacher; and g) be active in patient care at least one half day per week.

Because MU is limited to one nominee, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 1.  The letter of intent should be limited to two pages and should include 1) a brief description of the planned research and how its results might change current practice or policy, 2) a brief summary of the candidate’s current research and clinical responsibilities, 3) a description of the candidate’s success as a teacher, and 4) the name(s) of a potential mentor(s).

Amount: Up to 15 awards of up to $300,000 over three years.

MU Deadline: Letters of intent are due to the MU Office of Research by 5:00 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2005.
