This announcement for the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City supercedes the announcement sent by the Office of Research in May 2004. Communication with the Foundation since then has made us aware that this RFP is indeed a limited submission opportunity. As a result, anyone interested in applying to this program must submit a letter of intent to Mary Licklider ( AND to Elizabeth Cogswell ( no later than 5:00 pm Monday, June 20, 2004. Letters of intent should be limited to 2 pages and include a brief summary of the project activities, community partners, and budget.

The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City ( has issued a request for proposals to promote healthy lifestyles among youth from 0-25 years old.

The Foundation is dedicated to improving access and quality of health for medically indigent and underserved individuals and communities in Kansas City, Missouri and a surrounding 6-county service area in Kansas (Allen, Johnson, Wyandotte) and Missouri (Cass, Jackson, Lafayette). All funded services/programs must be designed and carried out for the benefit of the target population living in these areas.

Promoting healthy behaviors around well-known risks like physical inactivity, poor nutrition and tobacco use requires helping people develop the skills and motivation to translate knowledge into action. It also requires providing the ongoing support people need to sustain what are often difficult changes in lifestyles. Therefore, this Healthy Lifestyles RFP will focus on Nutrition and Fitness and Preventing Tobacco Use for ages 0 – 25.

The Foundation will not provide grants for biomedical research, clinical trials, or funding to individuals. The Foundation will not support medical procedures on an individual patient basis. Ineligible activities also include grants to offset the maintenance of effort by public or private entities, endowments, construction, non-mandated renovation, debt retirement, and political campaigns.

Collaboration and the leveraging of funds are important to the Foundation, and preference will be given to applicants that leverage resources from other sources. The Foundation will consider requests for 50 – 75% of the cost of the proposed project or activity. It is recommended that matching funds use a balanced approach of cash and in-kind resources.

Amount: A total of $2 million has been allocated to the funding of one-year grants that will be awarded in October. Grant requests in excess of $250,000 will require additional consideration.
