The Burroughs Wellcome Fund’s Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences are intended to foster the development and productivity of biomedical researchers early in their careers and help them make the critical transition to becoming independent investigators. The awards provide $500,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the early years of faculty service. Researchers who are interested in applying may be working in any of the basic biomedical sciences. During the award period, at least 80 percent of each awardee’s time must be devoted to research-related activities. Candidates must have completed at least 12 months but not more than 48 months of postdoctoral research training by the October 3 application deadline.

Because MU is limited in the number of nominations that may be made, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research, 203 Jesse Hall, no later than 5:00 Friday, September 2, 2005. Letters of intent should be limited to a one-page abstract that describes the proposed research, summarizes past work, and identifies the applicant's faculty sponsor. A copy of the applicant's curriculum vita should be attached.

Amount: $500,00 over five years. At least 18 awards will be made, aiming for a 50-50 split between PhD and MD recipients.
MU Deadline: 5:00 p.m., September 2, 2005
Foundation Deadline: October 3, 2005
