Limited Submission Announcement

The National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating US PhD scientists and engineers with the interdisciplinary backgrounds; deep knowledge in chosen disciplines; and technical, professional, and personal skills to become leaders and creative agents for change. The program is intended to establish innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce.

Because MU is limited to four preliminary applications for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010. Letters of intent should be limited to 3 pages, summarizing plans for 1) the interdisciplinary theme and major research efforts that form this theme; 2) graduate education and training; 3) recruitment, mentoring and retention; and 4) organizational structure of the program.

New Projects - first year up to $400,000 and up to $600,000 for each of the next four years. Additional funds of up to $200,000 may be provided in Year 1 for purposes appropriate to the new IGERT project (see details in the solicitation).

New and Renewal Projects - If proposed, additional funding up to a total of $200,000 PER AWARD may also be provided for IGERT projects that include strongly integrated international training activities in Years 2 through 5.
