Limited Submission Announcement

The NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) supports scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree in science and engineering disciplines.

The S-STEM program emphasizes the importance of recruiting students to science and engineering disciplines, mentoring and supporting students through degree completion, and partnering with employers to facilitate student career placement in the STEM workforce. Participating institutions are expected to support the goals of the S-STEM program including the following:

  • improved educational opportunities for students,
  • increased retention of students to degree achievement,
  • improved student support programs at institutions of higher education, and
  • increased numbers of well educated and skilled employees in technical areas of national need.

MU may submit one proposal from each constituent college or school that awards eligible degrees. Letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research,, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009. Letters of intent should be limited to a 3-page summary, including 1) the immediate and long-term objectives of the program, 2) plans for evaluating the success of the program and anticipated impact of the program, 3) plans to recruit and retain students, 4) support services available to aid scholarship students, and 5) the school/college from which the proposal would be submitted.


Up to $600,000 in total for a period of up to 5 years. Annual budgets are limited to $225,000.

Optional letters of intent are encouraged and due by August 11, 2009. Full proposals are due by September 14, 2009
