Grant Fact Sheet (PDF, 3 pages)

The Office of Grant Writing and Publications (OGWP) supports MU faculty by helping obtain external funding, building capacity and awareness about grant funding, and encouraging research and scholarly endeavors. Our Publications division publishes Research at MU News & Press Releases, annual reports, planning documents, and online and print versions of Illumination, an award-winning magazine celebrating research, scholarship and creative achievement at MU.

Our Goals:

  • Raise campus awareness of grant writer resources.
  • Encourage development and facilitate implementation of grantsmanship training opportunities.
  • Grow the professional expertise of the grant writer network.
  • Enable interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty members.
  • Provide direct assistance for writing grants.
  • Work with the Development Office to cultivate corporate and foundation grants.
  • Celebrate MU's research successes.

Grant Writer Network

The Grant Writer Network, coordinated by the Office of Research at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU), includes professional grant writers in various divisions or academic units across campus. The network meets weekly to share resources, information and talent, support each others' individual professional development, brainstorm solutions to problems, forge interdisciplinary collaborations, and generally advance the extramural funding agenda at MU. The network sponsors professional development activities for grant-seeking faculty and other grants staff, including the Faculty Grant Writing Institute, a biennial Grantsmanship Day, and quarterly professional development workshops.

Dr. Mary Licklider, Director of Grant Writing and Publications for the Office of Research, began building the grant writer network at MU in 1998 and was joined the following year by Assistant Director Susan Hazelwood. Mary and Susan continue to provide leadership to the network. Together, the network encompasses a broad range of educational backgrounds, technical expertise, and agency-specific knowledge that each member can draw upon to improve the quality of grant writing activities in their home division or unit.
