John Foley becomes a member of the prestigious 'Kalevalaseura,' the Finnish national honorary society for scholars and creative artists.

COLUMBIA, MO - John Foley, William H. Byler Chair in the humanities and curators' professor of English and classical studies at MU, has been elected to the Kalevalaseura, the Finnish national honorary society for scholars and creative artists.

The Kalevalaseura was founded in 1919 by leading figures in Finnish arts and science. In nearly a century of existence, the society has elected only 137 foreign members.

This year the society chose four new international members. They are Foley, Manapbaj Kerimbaev from Kyrgyzstan, Slavko Peleh from Croatia and Svetlana Staskoit from the Republic of Karelia, a autonomous part of the Russian Federation bordering Finland. "I am very pleased that MU will now have its name included among the world's universities represented in this elite body," Foley said in an e-mail following the announcement.

In recognition of the award, Foley and the other new members will receive a scroll and a silver pin based on the Kalevalaseura design that dates back to the establishment of the society in 1919.
