WHAT: The University of Missouri will host the 21st International Symposium on Radiopharmaceutical Sciences (ISRS2015). More than 500 world-renowned researchers and scholars will present the latest advancements in radiopharmaceutical science, or the field of nuclear medicine that focuses on imaging and treatment for many diseases including cancer.

More than 10,000 hospitals worldwide use radioisotopes in medicine, and about 90 percent of those procedures are for diagnosis, according to the World Nuclear Association. Mizzou is home to a long-standing radiopharmaceutical science program and the largest research reactor of its type on a university campus. The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) supports the research of hundreds of faculty each year and produces radiopharmaceuticals for cancer treatments that are used throughout the country.

“The first meeting of the society was held at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1976 with the most recent in Jeju, South Korea,” said Silvia Jurisson, conference chairperson, professor of chemistry and a researcher in radiopharmaceutical chemistry at the MURR. “I look forward to welcoming these stellar scientists and physicians to Mizzou for this biennial event.”

International attendees hailing from such countries as China, Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands and Australia will hear from speakers, including:

MU partners sponsoring the event include the School of Medicine, the College of Arts and Science, MURR, and Mizzou Advantage.
