It is the position of the University of Missouri Office of Research that research conducted by the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Missouri is in the public domain and considered fundamental research, as that term is defined in export control legislation promulgated by the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Department of State. Most University of Missouri research will therefore be exempt from export control licensing requirements. However, where export control regulations are applicable to our research activities, the University requires full compliance with the law.

When considering any of the following issues about your research or university-related activities, please contact the Office of Export Controls.
- Why are export controls important to me?
- Doesn’t the fundamental research exclusion cover everything?
- I plan to travel abroad. Should I consider export controls as I plan?
- If I am sharing information with a foreign colleague (either an individual or a company), are there any export control considerations?
- Are there any export control considerations for foreign national students working on my research project?
- My sponsor wants to restrict publication of research results and/or the participation of my foreign national students on my research project. Is this a concern?
- My research subjects are (for example, any of these – nuclear, chemical, biological, weaponry, missiles, space-related, unmanned vehicles, or encryption) technologies. Does this raise any export control considerations?
