Campus IRB Membership
The Campus Institutional Review Board (Campus IRB) is comprised of a diverse membership from the research and compliance community and charged with assuring that all research involving humans conducted at the University of Missouri-Columbia is reviewed by a panel with the appropriate expertise to appreciate the scientific merit, foreseeable risks, and benefits of the proposed research activities.
CHAIR: Charles Borduin, PhD. COMPLIANCE OFFICER: Michele Reznicek, RN, MBA, JD
Campus IRB members must possess the expertise to understand the complexity of the proposed research activities and appreciate the risks to human subject participants. A member must maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and participate in continuing education activities to maintain the current professional qualifications and knowledge necessary to assure adequate protection of human subjects involved in research.
A member shall be privileged to cast one vote and recommend an action regarding proposals in accordance with the Federal regulations, Federalwide Assurance, and Campus IRB Policies unless a conflict of interest prohibits their attendance in deliberations and voting procedures. The Campus IRB shall not accept votes by proxy.
All members shall maintain confidentiality of all information and materials associated with the Campus IRB processes, which includes but is not limited to, submitted proposals, research activities, proposals, consultation, guest appearances, internal Office of Research or IRB communications or correspondence, issues or discussions, deliberations, and decisions at the board meetings. No member shall share or use CIRB information or processes for "self-serving" interests. Failure to maintain confidentiality or serve as an IRB member in compliance with the ethical guidelines of the Campus IRB policies will be forwarded to the Office of Research, Director of Compliance for directives. Full Board Submission DeadlinesFull Board Deadline for Applications and AmendmentsAll submissions involving "greater than minimal risk" are due by the 1st of every month for consideration by the convened Campus IRB. If the 1st falls on a weekend or a holiday, the deadline in that case is the next business day. Applications involving activities posing "less than minimal risk" have no deadline for submission and will be reviewed on a first come-first-serve basis. In all cases, an application must be "complete" in order to be reviewed by the Campus IRB. The investigator should contact the Compliance Specialist assigned to their proposal, to assure the application is "complete."
Full Board Deadline for Continuing Review ReportsAll Continuing Review Reports involving "greater than minimal risk" (Full Board) must be submitted in compliance with the "Continuing Review Report" policy and received by the Campus IRB 45 days prior to the project expiration date. All "full board" Continuing Review Report submissions involving "greater than minimal risk" must meet this requirement to avoid missing the 1st of the month deadline for consideration by the convened Campus IRB. Federal guidelines prohibit a Continuing Review Report to be reviewed sooner than 30 days before the expiration date. The Campus IRB makes every effort to give the investigator enough notice to avoid the possibilities of delays in review or lapse of IRB approval. The investigator should submit the CRR report in a timely manner so that it is received by the 45 day required receipt date. If the file requires full board review, the investigator will need to make sure all requirements are met so the CRR will be reviewed within the 30 day guidelines for IRB review."
