MU Research: Encouraging Growth and New Opportunities

The FY 2015 research-and-development expenditures report provides an overall positive outlook for MU, while indicating room for continued improvement.

Internal research investments and extramural funding agencies generated more than $246 million in spending by faculty scientists and scholars at MU, a healthy four-percent increase over the previous fiscal year.

Newly awarded federal dollars, most coming in the form of highly competitive grants from federal agencies, saw significant increases for both sponsored researchand instruction and public service. And though federal research expenditures were slightly lower for FY2015 than the previous year, federal research awards showed a 4.8 percentage increase.

This measure, and expanded efforts for strategic faculty recruitment, are expected to invigorate growth in research and educational opportunities in the coming years.

Since becoming interim vice chancellor, I have worked to continue such progress.

Among my priorities for ensuring continued advancement is more fully integrating our graduate studies and economic development missions into the research enterprise. Our graduate students, for example, provide the engine that drives our research productivity, offering fresh perspectives as they assist faculty with teaching and research.

It is also vitally important that we continue to build and maintain a strong economic development infrastructure.

An indication of progress on this front is that the University’s number of active options and licenses — a measure of the rate at which MU research findings are moving into the marketplace — was at an all-time high in FY2015. And licensing income is continuing to increase, buoyed by a major licensing settlement. This funding has already provided important new opportunities to invest millions of dollars into the aging MU technology infrastructure across the many MU disciplines.

I believe, and hope you’ll agree, that this report shows opportunities to move us forward in each of these areas. Today, more than ever, we have to be well-positioned to maximize MU’s already considerable value, both intellectually and economically, to the citizens of Missouri and the nation.

Cores of Discovery

Nine Research Core Facilities at the University Missouri provide an important support for researchers working to advance a varietyof important scientific, scholarly and therapeutic goals. New equipment purchases, funded in part thorough patent and licensing revenueearned in FY2015, will significantly advance their work. Six examples from two core facilities are detailed below. You’ll find links to digital resources from all of MU’s core research facilities at research.missouri.edu/about/cores.

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY CORE

Before complex cellular structures can be examined via electron microscopy, they are typically frozen in place using a process called cryo-fixation. This new machine allows technicians to immobilize samples in milliseconds ensuring that fragile macromolecular components remain intact.

Materials examined in microscopy, whether tissue samples, microchips or nanoparticles, need to be sliced very, very thinly. This new ultramicrotome will, according to its manufacturer, Leica Microsystems, “produce section thicknesses between 20 nm and 2.5μm at temperatures down to -185°C.”

By focusing a stream of ions rather than electrons, FIB scanning microscopes enable scientists to process nano-scale samples with great precision. This machine, from Zeiss, combines “3D imaging technology...with the ability of a focused ion beam for material processing.”

 

MOLECULAR CYTOLOGY CORE

By using dual laser beams to simultaneously stimulate fluorescent molecules to glow while canceling out fluorescence in a nano-sized background area, this super-resolution scanning microscope allows researchers to observe previously invisible structures in cells.

Ground State Depletion (GSD) works by using lasers to turn on and off fluorescent photons. Alternating between “excitation and depletion” of samples allows cell biologists to produce stunningly detailed live-cell images in both two and three dimensions.

This sophisticated digital light-sheet (DLS) confocal microscope combines two common imaging systems to help researchers “follow sensitive developing organisms… over long time periods and to understand how tissue and organs form in real time and 3D.”

 

 

Sponsored Research and Development

Expenditures Remain Robust, Awards Totals See Gains

Sponsored research expenditures at the University of Missouri remained flat in FY 2015, totaling just over $115 million. Dollars awarded [not pictured] saw gains, however, increasing from $116.8 million to $118.5 million.

As in previous years, expenditures generated from federal sources accounted for the bulk of sponsored research funding. Federal sponsored research expenditures came in at $91.5 million, a slight decline from last year’s total.

Faculty scientists and scholars working in medicine, arts and science, agriculture, and engineering accounted for more than half of all sponsored-research expenditures. The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, at just over $31 million, retained its place as MU’s expenditure leader.

Instruction & Public Service

IPS Expenditure and Awards Totals Both Show Gains Over the Previous Fiscal Year

Instruction and Public Service expenditures tallied just over $78.1 million in FY 2015, a 2.5 percent increase over last year’s totals. Newly awarded IPS funds [not pictured] were also up significantly, increasing to $102.8 million, a 20 percent rise above last year’s $85.1 million total.

As in previous years, the federal government was the largest single sponsor of University instruction and public service activity in FY 2015, providing some 43 percent of total expenditures and nearly 76 percent of newly awarded funds. MU Extension once again accounted for the largest share of externally funded IPS expenditures. The College of Education’s total of more than $11.3 million was the college’s highest ever, up significantly over its FY 2014 total of $7.4 million.
