Deaton Named MU Chancellor

University of Missouri System President Elson S. Floyd on October 1, 2004 named Brady J. Deaton chancellor of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Deaton is the 21st chief executive officer for MU since its founding in 1839.

Deaton came to Columbia in 1989 as professor of agricultural economics, department chair and social science unit leader in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. He later served as chief of staff, deputy chancellor and, most recently, as provost and executive vice chancellor. Prior to that, he was associate director, Office of International Development, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he was on the faculty from 1978 to 1989. He was assistant and associate professor in the Dept. of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at the University of Tennessee from 1972 to 1978.

"As one of the nation's great state universities, Mizzou is one of the most exciting places to be in higher education today," Deaton says. "I am committed to providing the people of Missouri with the very best teaching, research and service."
